Six-legged livestock

Basic research
Rearing black soldier fly larvae on biowaste
  • Funding: Austrian Science Fund (FWF), Top Citizen Science project, grant TCS48
  • Period: July 2018 – December 2019
  • Budget: €50,702
  • Role: Principal investigator

Description

This project complements the FWF project From Waste to Feed, which tests black soldier fly prepupae raised on organic waste as animal feed. Household biowaste varies with diet, season and region, so citizens were recruited to run feeding experiments at home with their own food waste in self-built containers. The aim was to reduce public scepticism towards insect-based feed and to link science and society.
